The Otoom fractal
This particular fractal image is essentially a Mandelbrot set.
A combination of several types of iterations have been used together with a certain choice of colour rendering to produce its somewhat unusual form.
It is particularly representative of the theme underlying this site. The mind is a chaotic system, where patterns are adhered to, yet the specific outcome is unpredictable. Bifurcations do occur when an iteration producing some pattern has breached its boundaries - a new pattern emerges. The computer programs offered here are directly based on chaos-type dynamics.
Such a system can also be described as a closed one, because each functional detail is sustained by the mutual dependencies making up the whole.
Regard the shape as if it were a three-dimensional object; the textured colouring makes it easy. As you traverse the surface it becomes evident that every point can be reached from any location, from the more expansive regions to the delicate filigree (not every region is in view, there are 'valleys' hidden behind 'hills'). Not only is the terrain connected throughout, each contour, while having its own shape, hints at what is to come through its colour scheme; a feature of interdependent connectedness that occurs without fail.
See the posters at almost A3 size. At that resolution the above will become obvious.
